Overview of UPSC Civil Services Language Papers
The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) Civil Services Examination includes two mandatory language papers.
These language papers are qualifying in nature but often prove challenging for aspirants.
Data indicates that approximately 10% of candidates who excel in General Studies and optional subjects fail to clear the language papers.
A key drawback is that scores in other papers are not disclosed if these qualifying papers are not passed.
Despite not contributing to the final ranking, it is essential to devote sufficient attention and preparation to these papers.
Structure of UPSC Mains Language Papers
The UPSC Mains examination includes two compulsory language papers:
English Language (300 marks)
Any Indian Language of the Candidate’s Choice (300 marks)
These papers assess basic linguistic proficiency, ensuring candidates possess fundamental skills in English and an additional Indian language. While their marks do not contribute to the overall rank, clearing these papers is mandatory.
Minimum Qualifying Marks
As per the UPSC 2020 notification, candidates must secure a minimum of 25% marks in each paper, translating to 75 marks out of 300. Despite the straightforward syllabus, adequate preparation is essential to achieve these minimum marks.
