Mistakes to Avoid in Answer Writing
1. Try to Answer as Many Questions as You Can
In the UPSC Mains, it’s better to attempt as many questions as you can, even if you’re not fully confident about some of them. Some candidates only attempt questions they know well, but this can limit your chances of scoring well. If you try to answer more questions, even those you're a bit unsure about, you have a better chance of getting more marks.
2. Don’t Spend Too Much Time on One Question
It’s important to manage your time wisely. Don’t spend too much time on one question, even if it’s difficult. If you get stuck, move on to the next question, and come back to it later if you have time. The goal is to answer as many questions as possible, so make sure you don’t waste too much time on just one.
3. Be Balanced When Talking About Government Policies
When you write about government decisions or policies, try to be balanced. Don’t just criticize the government. Instead, if you think something can be improved, suggest better ways to do it. This shows you understand the topic and are thinking about solutions, not just pointing out problems.
4. Don’t Suggest Extreme or Unreasonable Solutions
In the UPSC exam, avoid giving extreme or unrealistic solutions. For example, suggesting something as extreme as "capital punishment" for the harassment of tourists is not a practical solution. Instead, focus on ideas that are possible and sensible. Always try to come up with solutions that are realistic and can actually be done.
5. Structure Your Answer Well
Your answer should be organized and easy to read. Don’t skip the introduction—always start by introducing the topic, even if it’s brief. If you have time, try to end with a short conclusion that wraps up your answer. A well-structured answer makes it easier for the examiner to follow and shows you are clear about your thoughts.
6. Pay Attention to Your Handwriting and Speed
Good handwriting and the ability to write quickly are important. If the examiner can’t read your handwriting, it will hurt your score. So, take some time each day to practice writing neatly and quickly. Try to write fast without making your handwriting hard to read. It’ll make a big difference in the exam.
By following these tips—answering more questions, managing time well, offering balanced views, suggesting practical solutions, keeping your answers clear, and improving your handwriting—you’ll be in a good position to do well in the UPSC Mains. Keep practicing and stay focused!
